Indigenous Communities in Manipur Embrace Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Livelihoods

In a step towards empowering indigenous communities and promoting sustainable practices, a project titled “Improved Ecosystem Governance for Resilient Local Livelihoods & Global Development” is making a positive impact in five remote villages. Funded by Bread for the World, Germany, the initiative began in April 2023 and is specifically designed to address the challenges faced by the Vangai Range Sub-Division, known for its remoteness, limited connectivity, and high migration rates.

Nature-Based Solutions for a Brighter Future:

The project focuses on promoting nature-based solutions (NbS) as a means for the indigenous people to build resilient livelihoods. This includes the recent distribution of saplings – Areca nut, Seedless Lichi, Banana, and Limbu – to 60 horticulture farmers and 20 homestead beneficiaries residing in Thingkal, Ngampabung, Phulpui, Patpuihmun, and Sartuinek villages. Additionally, 20 homestead beneficiaries received a female piglet each, further enhancing their income potential.

Empowering Marginalized Communities:

The project recognizes the socio-economic and social backwardness of the target area, where agriculture is the primary source of income. It specifically targets vulnerable groups like women (widows, single women), disabled individuals, and unemployed youth. By improving access to land rights, governance structures, and vital resources like housing, education, financial inclusion, and healthcare schemes, the project aims to empower these communities for long-term success.

Project Goals and Objectives:

  • Improve quality of life through sustainable development by strengthening governance and access to entitlements.
  • Enhance land rights and tenure security for tribal and marginalized communities.
  • Improve ecosystem resilience through NbS like promoting local forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and exploring Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) opportunities.
  • Increase access to essential social services like housing, education, financial inclusion, healthcare schemes, and insurance.

This initiative demonstrates the power of NbS in fostering sustainable development and empowering indigenous communities to thrive in harmony with their environment.
